Prosecutors around the country have created dedicated units within their offices responsible for investigating substantial claims of wrongful conviction. These investigations are triggered by the submission of a conviction integrity unit application.
Ms. Stanyar served as a project consultant for the Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) of the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. In existence for only three years, the Wayne County CIU has already investigated and recommended the exoneration of many defendants, convicted in Wayne County, who are now free or have been granted new trials.
The Michigan Attorney General’s Office has created a similar unit to address claims of wrongful conviction in counties throughout Michigan. Prosecutors in Washtenaw, Oakland, and Macomb have opened CIUs in those counties.
Ms. Stanyar is uniquely qualified to investigate cases, counsel defendants and their families, and to make presentations to these units.
